The discipline that executes a robust process of design, creation, and optimization of systems, consisting of identification and quantification of system requirements, creation of alternate system design concepts, performance of design trade studies, selection and implementation of the best designs and verification that the design is properly integrated and executed. Process that proceeds from concept to production to operation. This role contributes to the overall strategy of the business within the Systems Engineering area. Job Description Responsible for systems engineering activities that support: GE's fleet of BWRs including the BWRX-300 Small Modular Reactor (SMR). Primary design focus areas for our Mechanical Systems teams include: BWR Mechanical Balance of Plant (BOP) Systems such as: Heating Ventilation and Cooling, Plant Chilled Water Containment Cooling Systems Liquid and Solid Radiological Waste Management Plant Pneumatics Auxiliary Drain Systems Water, Gas, and Chemical Systems

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, or other relevant Engineering degree from an accredited university or college.
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in an Engineering role.
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience in mechanical system design activities including development of process flow diagrams, thermodynamic and heat/fluid flow transfer calculations, engineering specifications, etc.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in nuclear plant modifications, new construction, and/or nuclear fabrication, preferably with BWRs

  • Ability to effectively function in a dynamic design environment and manage the demands of multiple tasks and projects, while maintaining an uncompromised commitment to personal and nuclear safety principles
  • Master’s degree or PhD in an engineering or technical discipline.
  • SRO license qualifications or plant experience desired.
  • Strong Leadership skills.
  • Knowledge of working within a regulated environment (nuclear).
  • Knowledge of quality standards and systems (e.g., NQA-1 and ISO 9000).
  • Experience and/or interest in nuclear power industry.
  • Ability to work to tight deadlines and cope under pressure.
  • Relocation to Wilmington, NC is strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical guidance and leadership, oversee project scheduling and resource planning, develop talent through mentorship, and act as the point-of-contact between your engineering team and both internal and external customers.
  • Perform mechanical systems design and/or equipment procurement and construction activities, including requirements definition, process calculations and analysis, P&ID preparation, model review, vendor and client coordination, review and approval of vendor document submittals, and verification of deliverables produced by other engineers and teams.
  • Support the BWRX-300 certification processes for GE Products to address all US NRC (or other nuclear regulator) design certification requirements.
  • Conducts component and product integration.
  • Participates in all activities that span multiple components, systems, and products and are concerned with how to integrate for maximum performance and operability.
  • Manages product and systems requirements, specifications and flow down.
  • Drives validation and verification activities for the overall product/system, including system level operability and testing.
  • Responsible for defining product requirements for the module / component / subcontractors and partners teams.
  • Manages interface between system and execution organizations.
  • Responsible for driving Critical To Quality / Risk trades within the teams designing the components.
  • Manages the overall product configuration and configuration control system.
  • Developing specialized knowledge in their system and discipline.
  • Serves as best practice/quality resource.
  • Has awareness of latest technical developments in own area.
  • Contributes towards strategy and policy development and ensure delivery within area of responsibility.
  • Uses judgment to make decisions or solve moderately complex tasks or problems in areas of operational/product management, manufacturing, technology or engineering.
  • Takes new perspective on existing solutions.
  • Uses technical experience and expertise for data analysis to support recommendations.
  • Uses multiple internal and limited external sources outside of own function to arrive at decisions.
  • Be a key member of the Systems Engineering leadership team and specifically responsible for all technical and engineering deliverables needed to support plant design
  • Liaise with customers, in partnership with engineering leadership and Project Management.
  • Interface with cross-functional teams and departments necessary to complete assigned system design activities.
