Job Overview The Senior SEO Strategist, Site Structure & Category Content plays a pivotal role in driving how customers discover and navigate Macy’s digital ecosystem. This position focuses on taxonomy optimization, category-level content strategy, metadata governance, and internal linking frameworks that improve organic visibility and support seamless customer journeys across Macys.com. In this role, you will partner deeply with Site Merchandising, UX, Product Management, and Engineering to embed SEO principles into navigation, category architectures, templates, and on-site experiences. The ideal candidate brings strong structural SEO expertise and is highly confident translating data, insights, and search behavior into category-level improvements at scale.

Requirements

  • 3–5 plus years of SEO experience focused on site structure, taxonomy, category optimization, or large-scale content ecosystems.
  • Strong understanding of technical and content SEO principles, including crawl/index behavior, metadata strategy, internal linking, and taxonomy.
  • Hands-on experience with enterprise SEO tools such as Botify, Screaming Frog, SEMrush, Adobe Analytics, GSC, Looker, or similar platforms.
  • Ability to synthesize data into insights, create clear recommendations, and influence cross-functional partners.
  • Strong writing and editing skills for category-level content blocks (NOT editorial articles).
  • Comfortable influencing partners across Site Merchandising, UX, Product Management, and Engineering.
  • Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple projects, priorities, and stakeholders in a fast-moving environment.
  • Regularly required to sit, talk, hear; use hands/fingers to touch, handle, and feel. Occasionally required to move about the workplace and reach with hands and arms. Requires close vision.
  • Able to work a flexible schedule, including days, evenings, weekends, and holidays, based on department and company needs.

Responsibilities

  • Category & Taxonomy Optimization
  • Monitor and continue to refine Macy’s category taxonomy to ensure structures support both SEO and customer experience.
  • Partner with Site Merchandising and UX to shape naming conventions, categorization logic, and hierarchy improvements.
  • Optimize category titles, descriptions, metadata, and content hierarchy across L1–L6 pages.
  • Identify redundancies, misalignments, or content gaps within taxonomy and propose scalable solutions.
  • Internal Linking & Navigation
  • Develop internal linking strategies that improve crawlability, category authority, and customer pathways.
  • Partner with Product & UX to ensure navigational components (fly-outs, filters, breadcrumbs, scrolly-cats, etc.) reinforce SEO best practices.
  • Analyze crawl paths, index patterns, and navigational signals to recommend architectural updates.
  • Category-Level Content Optimization
  • Identify and execute opportunities to embed helpful content to category, subcategory, and brand pages.
  • Maintain content frameworks that reinforce discoverability, relevance, and alignment with user search intent.
  • Ensure all on-site content reflects Macy’s brand voice and adheres to SEO standards and structured content requirements.
  • Performance Tracking, Insights & Strategic Recommendations
  • Build and manage dashboards measuring category performance (SERP to Sale)
  • Forecast initiative outcomes, define measurement methodologies and track performance for all site structure and content optimizations.
  • Conduct keyword research, query-level analysis, and competitive assessments to identify category improvement opportunities.
  • Deliver quarterly strategic deep dives for business units (e.g., Beauty, RTW, Home) that outline category risks, strengths, and opportunities.
  • Translate complex data into clear, actionable recommendations for cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Serve as the day-to-day SEO partner for Site Merchandising, UX, Product, and Engineering on initiatives impacting site structure.
  • Participate in UX and Product roadmaps to ensure SEO requirements are accounted for in navigational components, category templates, and new features.
  • Communicate SEO needs clearly and effectively, advocating for structural improvements that drive measurable organic performance.
  • Continuous Improvement & Governance
  • Regularly audit category content, taxonomy, and metadata for completeness, competitiveness, and SEO value.
  • Document scalable workflows for recurring optimization processes such as taxonomy updates, category refreshes, and internal linking systems.
  • Stay up to date on SEO, SERP, and generative AI (GEO) trends that impact site structure and category performance.
  • Identify and test new opportunities to improve discoverability and drive incremental traffic.
  • Foster an environment of acceptance and respect that strengthens relationships, and ensures authentic connections with colleagues, customers, and communities.
