About The Position

The New York Times is searching for a Staff Software Engineer with deep experience in the web ecosystem for the Web Platforms team. We're looking for someone who values collaboration and learning with an interest in building web tooling for engineers across multiple product feature teams. You'll contribute to a central team in an organization that values empathy, collaboration, transparency, diversity, and learning. This is a hybrid remote/in-office role. Our services power the presentation for our News content for nytimes.com and related mobile app webviews. Our internal platform also includes a core monorepo, common components and libraries, observability and performance tooling, CI/CD, test automation framework, infrastructure, and security. We are accountable for improving the developer experience, performance, and resiliency of our web applications. Our primary technologies include React, Node, TypeScript, and GraphQL. You will report to the Engineering Manager of Web Platforms. This is a hybrid role based in our New York City headquarters.

Requirements

  • 2+ years of tech lead experience
  • 7+ years of full stack web development including building for other developers
  • Experience building, operating, and monitoring complex, performance-critical web systems at scale in GCP or AWS
  • Expertise with the JavaScript/TypeScript ecosystem, including: One or more Node.js frameworks (such as Express or TanStack) One or more frontend JavaScript frameworks/libraries (such as React SSR, Vue, or Svelte) JS build tooling (such as Vite, Yarn, pnpm, Turborepo, Lerna, Nx, or Babel)
  • Experience implementing CI/CD using industry standards (we use Argo and Github Actions)
  • Familiarity with Kanban or other Agile methodologies

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with GenAI tooling such as skills creation or agentic workflows
  • Expertise with mobile web views within native applications
  • Experience with client-side GraphQL (we use Apollo)

Responsibilities

  • Partner with other lead engineers to shape our ongoing web product strategy, architecture, and engineering culture.
  • Provide technical leadership for high scale, high visibility projects within the team and across teams.
  • Champion and coach industry best practices for engineering excellence and efficiency.
  • Partner with cross-functional leads to inform prioritization and long-term roadmap.
  • Provide technical mentorship and peer support to other engineers.
  • Deliver clear feedback through pairing, design review, and code reviews.
  • Support on-call, incident response, and troubleshooting efforts for platform-level escalations.
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
