Role summary: The (USA) Staff, Software Engineer plays a critical role in delivering scalable platform capabilities and driving the full software development lifecycle, including design, coding, testing, deployment, and maintenance, with a strong focus on building Java‑based backend systems and integrating machine‑learning capabilities into production platforms. About the team: Our team develops reusable technologies that enhance customer acquisition, onboarding, and merchant empowerment, ensuring seamless experiences across in-store, mobile, and web channels. We optimize tariffs and assortment aligned with Walmart’s Everyday Low Cost approach. Focused on transportation execution, we build scalable solutions for load creation, tendering, and automation supporting Fleet and third-party carriers. Leveraging technology and process innovation, we drive cost efficiency, improved visibility, and faster execution to support omnichannel growth. Collaboration, continuous improvement, technical expertise, and a product-driven mindset guide our efforts to deliver reliable software that enhances supply chain performance and customer satisfaction.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of experience designing and building large‑scale, production‑grade systems using Java.
  • Proven expertise in cloud-native architecture, including microservices, containers, and automation to ensure scalable and resilient systems.
  • Strong proficiency in software design patterns, API design, and software prototyping to deliver maintainable and modular solutions.
  • Experience driving full software development lifecycle activities, including coding, testing, CI/CD deployment, and observability.
  • Ability to integrate AI/ML components and develop intelligent automation using languages such as JavaScript, Python, Java, or C++.
  • Demonstrated technical leadership with mentorship skills and sound technical judgment for architectural decisions.
  • Data-driven decision-making skills to define metrics and optimize engineering processes.
  • Effective collaboration and communication across technical and business stakeholders.
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, computer information systems, software engineering, or related area and 4 years’ experience in software engineering or related area.
  • 6 years’ experience in software engineering or related area.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver platform capabilities including infrastructure, tooling, and ML frameworks aligned with roadmap milestones and domain priorities.
  • Apply cloud-native architecture principles to ensure scalable, resilient, and agile systems.
  • Lead full software development lifecycle activities including coding, testing, deployment, monitoring, and maintenance.
  • Conduct system design reviews to validate feasibility and ensure alignment with architectural best practices.
  • Build AI-driven applications and integrate ML components using multiple programming languages.
  • Mentor engineers, influence technical decisions, and promote standardization and sustainability.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to translate complex problems into actionable technical requirements.
  • Drive continuous improvement through data-driven practices, error correction, and innovation.
