About The Position

Mountain Lake Biological Station is a residential field research station in Pembroke, VA (a 25-minute drive from Blacksburg, VA). The Station is hiring full-time, seasonal assistants for late spring and summer. Assistants will provide operational and administrative support for the station and its researchers, faculty, students, and residents. Duties include assisting station users with a variety of residential- and research-related needs; maintaining trails and enclosures; removing invasive plants; assisting with a small retail operation; receiving payments and making deposits; providing clerical support; collecting recycling; moving station equipment and furniture; cleaning and organizing shared-use spaces; planning and advertising special events; using a variety of hand tools and outdoor power tools; and other duties supporting the operation of a remote biological field station. This position will pay an hourly rate of $16.00. The University will perform background checks on hires prior to employment. For this position, the background check also includes a DMV Licensure check. A driver’s license is preferred but not required. This is a wage position which is not eligible for leave or other benefits and is limited to 1500 hours of work in a year. Requirements

  • Education: High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Experience: 1+ year of relevant experience required. Additional education may substitute for experience.

Nice To Haves

  • General administrative skills such as answering phones, greeting visitors, and keeping records
  • Experience with Microsoft programs and data entry
  • Ability to assist with physically demanding tasks
  • Some college education
  • Comfortable working outdoors
  • Skill with basic shop and outdoor power tools
  • Valid driver’s license with a zero or positive point balance
  • Experience handling cash and credit cards
  • Familiarity with basic sciences
