About The Position

The McCloud River is one of California's most beautiful rivers and an iconic fly-fishing destination for anglers worldwide. Located in Northern California at the southern end of the Cascade Range, the McCloud River carves its way through a remote and scenic canyon beneath the rugged slopes of 14,000-foot Mount Shasta. The 2,330-acre Preserve offers three miles of hiking trails and a self-guided nature walk popular with hikers, birdwatchers, and wildflower enthusiasts. The Kerry Landreth Preserve at the McCloud River Stewardship Coordinator performs and participates in preserve operations, maintenance and management. This seasonal position is full-time and requires on-site residence 4 days per week in Nature Conservancy housing during the preserve’s open season. Duration of employment is mid-April through November 30, 2026. Some long hours are expected. The Stewardship Coordinator ensures the coordination, community support and implementation of preserve management plans. The Coordinator maintains preserve areas frequented by the visiting public, removes exotic species and/or monitors and researches species, maintains tools and equipment, may operate power tools and chainsaws, and opens and closes the preserve to the visiting public. Knowledge of freshwater fisheries, land stewardship, working with the public and maintaining infrastructure are relevant skills.

Requirements

  • BA/BS degree in science-related field and 1 year of related experience in custodial and ecological land management or similar field (or equivalent combination of education and experience. Equivalent: GED/high school diploma and 5 years of related work experience, AA and 3 years work experience, etc.)
  • Experience working/living in natural systems and remote areas.
  • Experience in ecological land management principles and/or forestry principles.
  • Experience operating various types of landscaping or forestry equipment and familiarity with basic trades (plumbing, carpentry) to maintain off-grid systems.
  • Wilderness First Aid certification or willingness to become WFA certified within first 30 days.
  • Experience operating and maintaining a chainsaw or willingness to be trained.
  • Experience using common software applications (e.g., Word, Excel, Web browsers).
  • Ability to complete tasks independently with respect to timeline(s).

Nice To Haves

  • 1 – 2 years related experience in custodial and ecological land management or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Strong communication skills. This position requires working with the public on a daily basis, as well as frequent engagement with partnering agencies and stakeholders.
