Requirements

  • Knowledge of Department Standard Specifications for Road and Bridge Construction, Structures Manual, Solids and Foundations Handbook, Bridge Load Rating Manuel, Plans Preparation Manuel, Design Standards, Basis of Estimates Manuel, Computer Aided Design & Drafting (CADD) Production Criteria Handbook
  • Knowledge of American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Load-And-Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) Bridge Design Specifications, Standard Specifications for Structural Supports for Highway Signs, Luminaires and Traffic Signals, Manual for Bridge Evaluation.
  • Knowledge of Structural engineering practices and principles
  • Skills in Utilizing Microsoft Programs (Excel, Word, etcetera)
  • Ability to Solve engineering problems
  • Ability to Utilize structural design/analysis software and MathCAD
  • Ability to Utilize Computer Aided Design and Drafting software
  • Ability to Read and interpret structures and roadway construction plans
  • Ability to Prepare project scopes of services and staff hour estimates
  • Ability to Effectively coordinate and communicate with others, verbally and in writing
  • Ability to Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others
  • A high school diploma or its equivalent and two years of continuous employment experience or two years of higher education with a cumulative of 48 semester hours or 72 quarter hours.

Responsibilities

  • Performs structural analysis, prepares Computer Aided Design and Drafting (CADD) produced contract plan sheets, design calculations, cost estimates, quantities and other engineering functions required for the production of simple short span bridges, miscellaneous highway structures, retaining walls, box culverts and sound barrier walls under the guidance of technical professionals.
  • Provides technical support for preparation of engineering reports and other documents associated with structural projects.
  • Performs quality control of in-house design calculations and contract plans.
  • Performs field reviews of project sites.
  • Reviews and evaluates consultant produced reports, plans and design calculations for structures.
  • Ensures plans and designs are produced in accordance with American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), Florida Department of Transportation (Department) and other approved design specifications.
  • Coordinates responses to State Structures Design Office and FHWA as necessary.
  • Identifies and analyzes commonly occurring errors and brings them to the attention of the technical professional.
  • Provides technical assistance and support for post-design activities.
  • Assists Technical Professionals with the review and evaluation of contractor re-designs, review of shop drawings, resolution of construction issues and other administrative issues related to post-design activities.
  • Provides technical assistance and support for preliminary engineering and consultant acquisition activities.
  • Assists with the preparation of scopes of services, staff hours, project schedules and construction cost estimates.
  • Performs technical assistance of District staff as needed in support of Project Development & Engineering, Value Engineering, Construction and Maintenance activities.
  • Assists with managing the miscellaneous structures design contract.
  • Attends technical training as required.
