About The Position

Independence Community College (ICC) seeks applications for the position of Summer Activities Assistant for the Upward Bound Program. Upward Bound is funded 100% by the U.S. Department of Education. The Activities Assistant (AA) will plan, coordinate, and execute all non-academic activities for the Upward Bound participants (local high school students) during the 5-week summer program and help plan and chaperone the end-of-program overnight trip. This is a seasonal position beginning Tuesday May 19th and ending Wednesday July 1st, with typical hours being 1:30PM-9:30PM Monday-Wednesday except for 3, 8AM-5PM training/preparation days (May 19th-21st) and the 3-day end-of-program overnight trip (June 29th-July 1st). The Activities Assistant is not required to reside in the residence hall. Compensation $2,200 less taxes

Requirements

  • Associate degree preferred, but will consider current degree-seeking students with at least one year relevant experience
  • Must have a valid driver’s license
  • Must demonstrate excellent interpersonal and leadership skills
  • Must demonstrate a sensitivity to, and strong interest working with, educationally and economically disadvantaged students
  • Ability to communicate effectively with participants, staff, and community
  • Assure timeliness of reports and communications with information management skills
  • Collaborative, collegial, and responsible work habits
  • High degree of ethical standards, including adherence to general rules of safety, confidentiality, procedures, and fair labor standards
  • Commitment to high professional standard, including professional growth

  • Position generally requires light work with occasional lifting of up to (30) pounds or more, carrying supplies, equipment
  • This position requires the ability to sit or stand or walk for extended and various periods of time. It also requires constant hand grasp and finger dexterity; extended standing, walking and repetitive leg and arm movements; occasional bending; reaching forward, side‐to‐side, downward, and overhead; and squatting and kneeling
  • The ability to effectively learn new computer programs and applications as necessary; the ability to effectively troubleshoot changing computer software issues
  • The ability to communicate clearly with small or large groups of people, with an excellent comprehension of the English language, is essential
  • Work is performed in both indoor and outdoor settings
  • Provide own transportation to and from campus, and appropriate licensing to operate college vehicles
  • Provide own cell phone and calling plan

Nice To Haves

Responsibilities

  • Set up, supervise, and clean up after all evening activities, Mondays-Wednesdays, for Summerfest Participants
  • Attend resident assistant training in person on 05/19-05/21 and regular staff meetings during the summer program as scheduled
  • Help plan and chaperone the end-of-program overnight trip on 06/29-07/01
  • Follow and enforce ICC and Upward Bound policies and procedures
  • Supervise and engage with participants
  • Work closely with the Head RA, RAs, Upward Bound staff, and other ICC staff to execute and supervise all recreational, educational, and cultural activities
  • Maintain accurate documentation
  • Serve as a positive role model for all Upward Bound participants
  • Perform other duties as assigned
