About The Position

The System Offices is one of several system members within the Texas A&M University System representing one of the largest systems of higher education in the nation, with a network of 12 universities, a comprehensive health science center, nine state agencies, and the RELLIS Campus. Job Description Summary: The Systems Administrator, under general supervision, collaborates with other IT personnel to assist with defining technology problems and solutions. Works on projects or business issues requiring state-of-the-art technical or industry knowledge. Is responsible for providing advanced technical support to research personnel, aiding in the design, deployment, integration, and management of research computing environments (compute, data, network, etc.) while ensuring compliance with institutional policies and federal regulations. This role is the lead for Linux and Unix systems for the Bush Combat Development Complex, but also supports other systems to include vmware and GCC High users and integrations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Five years of related experience.
  • Must be able to gain and maintain a DoD (Department of Defense) security clearance.
  • Knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet applications.
  • Knowledge of advanced analysis, troubleshooting, problem-solving, client relations skills, requirement assessment and analysis, project management methodology, and proficiency with the Information Technology Interface Library (ITIL).
  • Excellent written communication, analytical, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Experience with both Windows and Linux system administration.
  • Ability to lift medium (20-40 lbs.) size boxes or equipment.
  • May require work outside of normal office hours.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all-weather conditions.
  • Ability to climb stairs (equipment on elevated structures, etc.)
  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience designing complex compute, data, and network environments, preferably within a research or technical environment.
  • Experience with virtualization, research computing infrastructure, scientific software, and custom lab instrumentation.
  • Ability to prioritize in a dynamic research environment and balance multiple concurrent tasks.
  • Experience in Research Development Test & Evaluation (RDT&E) technical subject areas of: Networks, Cybersecurity, Instrumentation & Data Analytics, Modeling & Simulation, Test Support & Operations, and Avionics.
  • Professional Industry certifications.

Responsibilities

  • Manages and designs the Unix and Linux infrastructure for the Bush Combat Development Complex
  • Designs, develops, and executes hardware and software solutions to address low to medium impact business problems.
  • Ensures requirements are met and evaluates performance.
  • Coordinates the support for security patching and compliance for IT systems.
  • Supports systems and users utilizing the GCC High environment.
  • Works with other IT personnel in the planning and designing of systems infrastructure.
  • Ensures the accuracy and effectiveness of the system to meet business/customers' requirements.
  • Monitors the performance of systems and suggest improvements.
  • Creates system related documents/reports including installation procedures, control documents, and test plans.
  • Works with other vendors and IT personnel for any problem resolutions required.
  • Collaborate with other IT personnel to understand application improvements and plans for change.
  • Perform other duties as required.
