About The Position

Trust Administrator I Who We Are: First Maryland Disability Trust, Inc. (FMDT) is a non-profit organization serving individuals with disabilities of all ages throughout Maryland. FMDT offers cost effective trustee and trust management services with a personal touch, designed to enhance the quality of life of our beneficiaries while protecting their eligibility for public benefits. We also serve as court-appointed guardian, financial power-of-attorney, and as financial representative payee for public benefits. We’re a small, and growing, tight-knit team with a strong dedication to serving the disability community. The Trust Administrator I (Pooled Trusts): The Trust Administrator I (Pooled Trusts) will manage a broad portfolio of first-party, pooled special needs trusts, and work closely with trust beneficiaries, family members, and other parties and the Trust Administration Team to ensure funds are administered legally and according to the trust documents, and to ensure clients’ needs are met and policies and procedures are designed to best serve our clients. A Typical Day May Look Like This: Communicate and collaborate about trusts and clients’ needs with clients and their family members, guardians, advocates, medical professionals, attorneys and accountants, and governmental agencies about the special needs trust and the client’s needs. Meet with prospective clients, their families and/or counsel to explain our trust management services. Assist with completing trust agreements and joinder agreements and obtain all required documentation. Manage and administer assigned special needs trusts. Manage discretionary distributions for clients. Represent FMDT at professional conferences and trade shows. NOTE: The Trust Administrator I is not responsible for developing new trust business or investing funds on behalf of clients.

Requirements

  • 3-5 years' trust administration experience, preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree in legal/paralegal studies, business, or related field, or equivalent work experience
  • Strong knowledge of fiduciary law; trust accounting/reporting; and basic tax implications
  • Commitment to our mission to serve the disability community
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills to cultivate and maintain positive and productive relationships with trust beneficiaries and their families and advocates
  • Strong organizational, time management, analytical, and problem-solving skills
  • Intermediate proficiency with trust administration software/technology tools; Excel; Outlook; and Word

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of public benefit programs such as SSA, SSI, SSDI, Medicare, Medicaid and waiver programs in the context of their support for trust beneficiaries
  • Knowledge of estate administration and guardianships
