About The Position

The Vice President of Acquisitions & Investment Development is a critical leadership role at Azenta, reporting to the Senior Vice President, General Counsel & Corporate Secretary. This executive will lead Azenta’s inorganic growth strategy—driving market intelligence, opportunity development, diligence execution, negotiation, and early integration planning. The VP will develop and refine investment theses aligned with key Life Sciences segments, build and manage a high-quality funnel of acquisition targets, and ensure that completed transactions enhance Azenta’s portfolio, competitive position, and long‑term growth. Success in this role is measured by the quality, velocity, and strategic fit of opportunities advanced through the funnel and the value realized from completed transactions.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 3 years at a top-tier strategy consulting firm (e.g., McKinsey, BCG, Bain), with emphasis on growth strategy.
  • Minimum of 4 years in a life sciences or technology company leading business development, strategy, or strategic marketing.
  • Leadership or key contributor roles in 40+ diligence processes and 10+ closed transactions strongly preferred.
  • Total Experience 10+ years post-MBA or advanced degree, with demonstrated success in acquisitions, strategic alliances, or corporate development roles.
  • Creative, intellectually curious, and strategically intuitive, paired with strong analytical rigor.
  • Self-driven with the stamina and discipline to manage multiple simultaneous deals at varying stages.
  • Strong quantitative skills with the ability to distill complex issues into clear insights and action plans.
  • Ability to leverage operational understanding to elevate diligence quality.
  • Managerial courage and tact, combining the ability to formulate and back opinions while engaging with an open mind with other deal team members to help the Company make the best deal-related decisions
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to build trust and credibility at all organizational levels, including operating company leadership and staff, the OCE, Board members, and external stakeholders.
  • Expertise in qualitative and quantitative market research, including primary research methodologies.
  • Strong understanding of corporate strategy, business models, and due diligence workflows.
  • Financial acumen with ability to interpret financial statements, operating metrics, and valuation drivers.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including Board‑level presentations.
  • Proven ability to lead cross‑functional teams in decentralized environments.
  • Strong project management capability, with disciplined planning and execution.
  • Bachelor’s degree required (technical discipline preferred).
  • Located near a major international airport.
  • Willingness to travel 30–50%+, domestically and internationally, often on short notice.
  • Demonstrated commitment to discretion, ethics, and professional handling of sensitive and nonpublic information.

Nice To Haves

  • Broad operational experience or prior strategic consulting experience is a plus.
  • International experience, particularly in the EU and PRC, is advantageous.

Responsibilities

  • Market Research & Target Identification Conduct deep market analysis to identify attractive segments and high-potential bolt‑on or adjacent targets. Assess regulatory trends, growth drivers, cyclicality, margin stability, customer dynamics, and competitive positioning. Prioritize and refine the funnel of actionable candidates based on strategic fit and value‑creation potential.
  • Analytics & Business Intelligence Partner with IT, Intellectual Property, and Finance to build proprietary analytical tools and dashboards that generate market and target insights. Leverage data-driven frameworks to support prioritization, valuation, and decision-making.
  • Pipeline & Funnel Management Establish and enforce rigorous funnel management principles, qualification standards, and governance routines. Maintain clear accountability for pipeline health, stage progression, and throughput.
  • Gemba & Field Insight Development Engage directly with target companies—primarily onsite—to understand customer pain points, purchasing behaviors, workflows, and opportunities for value creation. Translate field insights into actionable investment theses and diligence priorities.
  • Due Diligence Leadership Lead and coordinate all cross-functional diligence workstreams to assess financial, operational, commercial, regulatory, and strategic risks. Oversee external experts as needed to deepen market or technical assessments. Synthesize findings into decision-focused diligence reports and deal white papers for review by the Office of the Chief Executive and the Board of Directors.
  • Financial Modeling & Valuation Collaborate with Finance to develop robust valuation models, assess ROIC, and evaluate scenario-based outcomes. Ensure financial analyses align with strategic priorities and risk-adjusted return expectations.
  • Post-Merger Integration Preparation Develop early integration hypotheses, synergy assessments, and organizational fit evaluations. Facilitate a structured handoff to business unit leadership and the integration leader by collaborating on the creation of detailed integration plans and by overseeing the 100-day post-closing strategic review.
  • Continuous Improvement / Azenta Business Systems Champion the Azenta Business Systems within Corporate Development to drive repeatable processes, operational excellence, and continuous improvement across market work, funnel development and progression, diligence, deal execution, and integration planning.
