About The Position

Pacific BioLabs is an independent CRO providing cGMP/GLP testing in toxicology, biocompatibility, pharmacology, analytical chemistry, and microbiology. We are currently hiring to support our clients in the pharmaceutical, biotech, and medical device fields. Join us in our mission to improve public health through science! PBL has immediate openings for a Vivarium Supervisor in the In Vivo Services Department. The Vivarium Supervisor will be responsible for managing all vivarium operations, animal procurement, animal census, animal health monitoring, vivarium equipment maintenance, supervision and training of both Animal Care and In Vivo staff.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a science-related field (e.g., Animal Sciences, Biological Sciences, Toxicology, Pharmacology) with 7+ years of laboratory experience. Candidates with relevant vivarium experience may substitute for a degree.
  • Minimum 3+ years of experience managing a vivarium.
  • Broad understanding of laboratory animal best practices including scientific knowledge demonstrated by prior work experience in a scientific/laboratory/vivarium setting.
  • Willingness to work with potentially hazardous biological and chemical substances.
  • Willingness to work extended and/or consecutive shifts as deemed necessary by Management.
  • Must be flexible with work schedule, weekend, and holiday work.
  • Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Must have the ability to work in a team environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must have full use of hands, arms, and legs with occasional lifting of objects weighing up to 30 lbs.
  • Must be able to work with persons of diverse background and function as a team.
  • Must be able to follow verbal and written direction.

  • AALAS certification preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Daily management of the Animal Care staff that includes all aspects of animal husbandry, animal delivery, housing, and enrichment.
  • Oversight of the animal monitoring program.
  • Oversight and approval of all animal requests and orders, and maintenance of weekly census.
  • Ensuring all animal welfare concerns are brought to the attention of the veterinary staff in a timely manner.
  • Ensuring compliance with approved study protocols, standard operating procedures, regulations, and guidelines.
  • Oversight of the Veterinary Services Report (VSR) process for initiating, performing, and documenting animal health activities directed by veterinarians including emergencies.
  • Working with Department Management, scheduling and conducting pre-study protocol meetings for special/custom studies ensuring that all key stakeholders are adequately prepared, including training of In Vivo personnel.
  • Participating in the development and maintenance of animal study protocols and Animal Care and Use Protocols (ACUPs) in compliance with IACUC, AALAC and other regulatory guidances.
  • Participating in technically challenging procedures and/or assisting veterinarians in procedures based on knowledge and experience.
  • Working closely with Facility Management to ensure that vivarium environmental conditions are maintained, monitored, recorded and in compliance with protocols and other relevant guidance documents.
  • Ensuring that maintenance (e.g., CAL and PM) of vivarium equipment is current.
  • Assisting in preparation for routine and regulatory vivarium inspections.
  • Performing client facility tours.
  • Serving on the IACUC.
  • Fostering collaboration and effective teamwork with Animal Care staff, In Vivo Services staff, veterinarians, and management.
  • As needed, perform classroom training for studies that includes both SOP and technical/procedural overview with staff that will be conducting studies.
  • As needed, perform operational and procedural oversight of studies and animal activities ensuring staff are following SOPs, ACUPs, and protocols.
