About The Position

The Vivarium Technician & Aquatics Support is responsible for maintaining and operating Bureau Veritas's biological testing facility and supporting the GPS Environmental Aquatics research program. This role ensures 24/7/365 animal care, facility compliance with AAALAC and IACUC standards, and technical support for aquatics research in a <10,000 sq ft vivarium space.

Requirements

  • Laboratory animal medicine and veterinary technical knowledge
  • Understanding of animal welfare regulations and AAALAC standards
  • Aquatic animal husbandry and health monitoring expertise
  • Water quality testing and aquatic system maintenance
  • BSL-2 biosafety protocol competency
  • Strong attention to detail and documentation skills
  • Independent work capability during 24/7 operations
  • Equipment troubleshooting and maintenance coordination
  • Proficiency with Excel for data compilation and reporting
  • Ability to respond calmly to emergency/alert conditions
  • Bachelor's Degree in Veterinary Science, Laboratory Animal Medicine, or closely related field
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience with laboratory animal care and husbandry
  • AAFLAS certification required: LAT (Lab Animal Technician) minimum; LATg (Lab Animal Technologist) or CMAR (Certified Manager of Animal Resources) preferred

  • Minimum of 1 year of aquatic animal husbandry experience preferred

Responsibilities

  • Perform daily animal husbandry and vivarium operational duties to maintain 24/7/365 care standards
  • Monitor and respond to alert/alarm conditions; maintain secure facility environment
  • Coordinate planned deliveries and contractor visits; maintain facility cleanliness per IACUC and accreditation standards
  • Execute quarterly facility sanitization and maintain tissue prep lab and necropsy areas (BSL-2 level work)
  • Provide technical support for aquatics research: husbandry, system maintenance, breeding, egg collection, and lab-related tasks
  • Conduct quarterly fish health and disease surveillance; collect, ship, and compile water/tissue sample results
  • Write summary reports for Attending Veterinarian, Principal Investigators, and IACUC
  • Perform facility QA tasks (daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, annual): monitor macro-environment (light, temperature, humidity, bacteria, water quality, vermin) and micro-environment (tank housing, enrichment, animal health, breeding)
  • Coordinate contractor oversight for equipment calibration: HVAC, biosafety cabinets, fume hoods, scales, Edstrom WatchDogEX components, and safety equipment
  • Contact engineering for facility repairs and preventative maintenance; follow up on completion
