About The Position

Reporting to the Weekend Residence Education Manager, the Weekend Residential Educator fosters a supportive and safe residential community environment that promotes personal growth, academic achievement, and positive social interactions among students.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • A minimum of three years of professional K-12 experience with residence education, student services, or a related field.
  • Ability to communicate in American Sign Language.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree.
  • Strong familiarity with residence hall management approaches and student disciplinary philosophies.
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of deaf adolescent needs and characteristics.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle emergency situations concerning K-12 grade students.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with and across University departments, outside constituents, and groups.

Responsibilities

  • Provides day-to-day supervision of students in the residential hall, ensuring their safety, security, and well-being
  • Serves as a mentor and role model, fostering positive relationships with students and offering guidance and support
  • Addresses student concerns and issues promptly and appropriately.
  • Maintains the residence environment as a safe place for students to reside
  • Provides direct supervision to students after school hours and on weekends
  • Checks daily attendance
  • Supervises and enforce schedules, curfew, and study hours
  • Supervises students in the cafeteria
  • Ensures that students are in appropriate areas at all times
  • Patrols the MSSD campus and buildings.
  • Collaborates with other departments in planning a total educational environment for students
  • Participates in and supervises multiple activities that enhance the personal and academic development of students, including on-campus activities (OCA), the After School Program (ASP), community service, and weekend activities.
  • Collaborates with Residential Educators to develop and implement educational programs and activities that enhance students’ learning experiences outside the classroom
  • Facilitates workshops, study groups, and enrichment sessions to support academic skills, career exploration, and personal development
  • Facilitates leadership training and extracurricular activities that encourage students to take on leadership roles and develop teamwork and organizational skills, and collaborate with teachers to align dormitory activities with students’ educational goals beyond their regular curriculum.
  • Encourages and support students in setting and achieving personal goals, including time management, responsibility, and self-discipline
  • Promote positive behavior and foster a culture of respect, inclusivity, and community within the dormitory
  • Acts as a mentor and role model, providing students with valuable life skills and guidance and document with quarterly progress reports.
  • Fosters a positive and supportive dormitory environment where students feel comfortable expressing themselves and seeking help
  • Hosts regular community meetings, provide guidance and emotional support as needed, helping students navigate challenges and build resilience
  • Organizes social activities and team-building exercises that promote interpersonal skills, empathy, and a sense of community among students.
  • Collaborates with Residential Educators on their assigned caseload students
  • Maintains accurate records of student attendance, incidents, and other relevant information
  • Assists the Residential Educators with communicating regularly with parents and guardians regarding students' progress and well-being
  • Assumes the responsibility for regular and ongoing contacts with the Residential Educator caseload’s parents
  • Assists Residential Educators with keepings parents informed of updates by regular communication, sharing photos, and celebrating students’ milestones
  • Documents every communication with parents in the caseload binder.
  • Supports students' academic progress by monitoring study habits, providing academic guidance
  • Organizes and facilitates study sessions where students can receive academic support in subjects they find challenging
  • Creates a structured and resource-rich study environment within the dormitory
  • Monitors and supports students' academic performance and liaise with teachers and advisors.
  • Works closely with and guides dorm and long-term dorm assistants by managing daily operations, providing training, support, and performance evaluations to ensure a safe and positive living environment for students.
  • Assists Residential Educators who serve as a sponsor for organizations, classes and/or programs
  • Works with the Office of Student Engagement staff to prevent scheduling conflicts
  • Assists with the planning and development of student leadership opportunities.
  • Conducts regular room checks and ensures the dormitory is secure
  • Implements and monitors safety protocols, including emergency evacuation procedures.
  • Enforces dormitory rules and school policies consistently and fairly according to MSSD's Code of Conduct
  • Addresses disciplinary issues promptly, document incidents and follow up with appropriate actions
  • Promotes positive behavior and conflict resolution among students
  • Documents through PowerSchool and communication logs promptly.
  • Maximizes prep time by doing dorm operation assignments, reading and responding to emails, planning for workshops, sponsor tasks, progress report monitoring, and case management work.
  • Supports students in maintaining a balanced lifestyle by providing resources and programs focused on physical health, mental well-being, and healthy habits
  • Coordinates wellness activities such as fitness classes, mindfulness sessions, and nutrition workshops to promote overall well-being
  • Monitors students’ physical and emotional well-being, providing support and referrals to school counselors or healthcare professionals as needed.
  • Maintains close communication with SHS, distributes medication, and documents on the medicine log sheet.
  • Provides for the attractiveness of the dorms
  • Works with students to develop bulletin boards
  • Decorates the dorms for special activities and events
  • Ensures that dorm rooms and common areas are clean and maintained at all times
  • Enforces community and deep cleaning expectations.
  • Participates in regular training and professional development opportunities
  • Attends staff meetings and contributes to the continuous improvement of the residential life program
  • Stays informed about best practices in residential education and adolescent development.
  • Arranges transportation for students as needs arise, and facilitates communication between students and their families for open and closed weekends.
  • Serves as Floor Captain during drills and emergencies.
  • Serves as mentors, role models, and resources for students living on campus, ensuring their well-being and adherence to school policies.
  • Serves as a driver on call when emergencies arise with students during work shift and non-work shift hours, on a rotational basis
  • Serves as an urgent on call person during non-work shift, on a rotating basis
  • Replaces Residential Night Assistants in the event of a shortage during the overnight shift, on a rotating basis.
  • Establishes and maintains a positive and supportive working relationship with co-workers and supervisors.
  • Demonstrates a genuine commitment to belonging in the workplace and participates in activities and workshops to foster continuous learning.
  • Serves as a mandatory reporter under Title IX
  • Commits to completing Title IX training and other compliance requirements on an annual basis.
  • Prioritizes safety in the workplace as a collective responsibility for the well-being of employees and fosters a culture of safety that is integral to our success, including strict adherence to safety procedures and protocols and promptly reporting safety hazards or incidents.
