The Aviation Claims Division Internship program includes a combination of activities aimed at providing the intern a full understanding of the Claims department and how it interacts with other functions within the organization. Great American's Aviation Division specializes in the placement of hull, liability, and excess liability across a wide array of aviation-related risks. The team has extensive experience in the aviation industry in areas including air traffic control, land-based operations, and commercial pilot operations. Our claims can range from straightforward incidents and accidents that result in minor or major aircraft damage to catastrophic and tragic aircraft accidents involving single or multiple fatalities. We collaborate closely with aviation defense attorneys and aviation experts to determine causation (what caused the plane to crash?) and liability (who was at fault?) and determine what, if any damages are awarded should the fault lay with our insureds. The program is a potential pathway to a career in insurance with a focus on the claim handling process. Internships typically consist of an 8-10-week period over the summer. We are accepting resumes for Aviation Claims Division Internship candidates starting now through May.

Requirements

• 3.5 preferred GPA, with a 3.0 minimum GPA for consideration
• Proven leadership skills through work experience (prior internship/co-ops a plus), campus involvement, and/or extracurricular activities
• Superior communication, analytical, planning, and organizing skills
• Self-motivated, as the nature of the internship may requires independent work
• Current students in a bachelor’s degree or higher program in a wide range of majors.
• Candidates with Insurance and/or Risk Management, Legal, Aviation, etc. acumen students are encouraged to apply
• May 2026 graduate preferred but not required

Responsibilities

• Within the Aviation division, the claim intern will work on meaningful assignments and gain exposure to a variety of claims functions, including aviation claims handling, analysis, and investigation.
• To gain a broader perspective of the business, interns may have the opportunity to meet with individuals who work in the other various functions within the group.
• Exposure to multiple claim functions including assignments within the Aviation Unit team, to include, but not limited to Aviation claims involve highly specialized subject matter.
• Reviewing FAA documents, exemptions (e.g., FAA 44807, Part 137, pilot certificates, FAA medical certificates, etc.), logs, and aircraft records as part of the investigative process.
• Assisting the assigned claim professional in gathering and sorting technical materials for coverage evaluation.
• Claim handling assignments and shadowing within the Claim Services team including initial coverage analysis, first contact, investigation, and technical writing
• Learn and perform functions utilizing the various claims systems, programs, and databases
• Participate in special projects within the division and corporate organization
• Various reading assignments, self-study courses, case studies, and projects, on a diverse range of topics, providing a foundation of insurance knowledge and overall professional development
• Participation in seminars and workshops, including Great American Claims College and Great American University offerings
