About The Position

Instructor/Assistant Professor (FTT) - Director of Music Education , (Elementary / General Music Focus). Full-Time Temporary Faculty position beginning August 2026 and renewable. The Department of Music invites applications for a Director of Music Education with a primary focus on Elementary/General Music Education. The Director of Music Education provides leadership for the undergraduate music education program, working collaboratively with music faculty and the Department Chair. Responsibilities include teaching undergraduate music education courses, supervising student teachers, coordinating clinical field experiences, and overseeing program logistics. The program emphasizes a balanced student teaching model consisting of seven weeks in elementary settings and seven weeks in secondary settings, preparing graduates for the full K–12 job market (elementary, vocal secondary, and instrumental secondary). Additional teaching responsibilities may include courses such as learning theories, practicum, ear training (ETSS), class piano or other areas aligned with the candidate’s expertise and departmental needs. The curricular direction of the program is established collaboratively by music education faculty and may evolve over time based on the strengths, experience, and vision of the Instructor/Assistant Professor (FTT) - Director of Music Education Rank to be determined by qualifications.

Requirements

  • ABD or earned doctorate (Ph.D. or Ed.D.) in Music Education or a closely related field by the time of appointment.
  • A minimum of five years of diverse K–12 public school teaching experience is required, with a primary emphasis on Elementary/General Music Education.
  • Demonstrated pedagogical alignment with an Ear Training and Sight Singing (ETSS) framework; preference given to candidates with experience in Music Learning Theory (MLT).
  • Evidence of administrative ability to manage program logistics, including student teaching placements, curricular coordination, and assessment.
  • Willingness and ability to contribute to departmental teaching needs beyond music education, in collaboration with the Department Chair and faculty. Teaching assignments may include ear training (ETSS), class piano, educational technology or other areas appropriate to the candidate’s experience.
