About The Position

The N.C. Department of Information Technology (NCDIT) serves as the Technology Center for the State of NC. Services that NCDIT provides reach a client base of state and local government agencies, as well as schools, colleges and universities. NCDIT’s mission is to enable trusted business-driven solutions that meet the needs of North Carolinians. NCDIT provides technology services to state agencies and is charged with closing the digital divide by expanding availability of broadband services and promoting the adoption of affordable, high-speed internet. The position is designated Statutory Exempt (EHRA) and is exempt from the State Human Resources Act. Join us as our next Network Technician and help keep our systems running strong! We currently have an opening for a Network Technician. This position will be part of the Network Support group in the DIT-Service Support division. Duties will be primarily onsite support across all services utilizing ITIL service processes of change, incident, release and configuration management. This position will implement new releases of service components into the operational environment following well-defined processes. This position will implement moves, adds, and changes to service components. This position will be involved in the investigation, diagnosis, resolution of problems and incidents. Service components include routers, firewalls, switches, gateways, cable infrastructure, and communications software and protocols. About the Division: The NCDIT Service Delivery organization provides for the central provisioning of the services offered by NCDIT, including data, voice and video for the State of North Carolina and other authorized government and public sector entities. The Service Delivery team designs, develops and maintains the North Carolina Information Network (NCIN), the State’s official secure data communications network. NCIN is a multiprotocol, router-based Wide Area Network providing statewide data communications and Internet connectivity to all Executive Branch agencies and participating non-Executive public sector entities. The Network Field Support unit provides onsite field support to DIT customer sites statewide across a range of services such as WAN, LAN, Security, and VoIP.

Requirements

  • High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and one year of IT experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • This position requires a fingerprint-based background search.
  • Hires must agree to a fingerprint-based background search prior to being hired.

Nice To Haves

  • Moderate knowledge of network operations, routing protocols, topologies, switching, communications services, and digital electronics
  • Able to assemble network components, diagnose and resolve telecom and network issues, and collaborate with technical staff
  • Capable of applying software configuration templates to network hardware

Responsibilities

  • Performs site surveys, assessments, and physical inventories
  • Work with other analysts and specialists to resolve incidents and problems
  • Work with other analysts and specialists to perform changes
  • Performs installations of new equipment and infrastructure which may include cabling, switches, patch panel, VOIP, firewall, routers, AP’s at customer locations
  • Insure availability of proper equipment for site visits including tools, cables, and hardware
