This summer research project explores how immersive augmented and virtual reality (A/VR) environments and digital twin technologies can be used to safely and effectively operate robots in self-driving laboratories. Students will help develop general, reusable interfaces that connect robotic systems, their digital twins, and immersive environments, moving beyond today’s bespoke solutions. The project investigates best practices for integrating A/VR with robotics, focusing on challenges such as latency, representation, resolution, usability, and safety. Using Argonne’s rapid prototyping laboratory, the work combines human-operated laboratory tasks, AI model training with transfer learning, and real-time digital twin data handling to improve process optimization and risk awareness. The outcome will provide practical tools and insights that advance the safety, efficiency, and educational value of AI-enabled scientific laboratories.
