About The Position

SMX is seeking a driven and talented Applications Systems Administrator, with a background in VDI solutions, to join our thriving Digital Solutions Group. This individual will bring a passion for technology, a strong technical skill set, and proven experience in support of all aspects of end user Virtual Desktop Infrastructure. Essential Duties & Responsibilities Image Creation & Lifecycle Management Develop, configure, and maintain standardized “golden images” for VDI deployments, including operating systems, core applications, and security components. Optimize images for performance, security, and compliance with DoD standards. Manage the full lifecycle of VDI images, including versioning, testing, validation, and production rollout. Application Packaging & Delivery Package, virtualize, and integrate applications for delivery within the VDI environment. Conduct compatibility and performance testing to ensure reliable application behavior across VDI platforms. Patching & System Updates Establish and maintain structured processes for applying security patches, OS updates, and software revisions to VDI images. Collaborate with security and application teams to ensure timely deployment of updates. Automation & Performance Optimization Automate image creation, deployment, and maintenance workflows using scripting tools such as PowerShell. Monitor VDI performance and implement improvements to enhance system efficiency and user experience. Troubleshooting & Technical Support Serve as an escalation point for complex VDI-related issues, including performance degradation, application failures, and connectivity challenges. Diagnose and resolve advanced technical problems related to VDI images, virtual desktops, and supporting infrastructure. Documentation & Knowledge Management Develop and maintain comprehensive documentation covering VDI image configurations, processes, standards, and operational procedures. Ensure documentation remains current to support operational continuity and knowledge transfer.

Requirements

  • Clearance Required: Top Secret
  • Willingness to work 5 days/week on site - Patuxent River, MD
  • 3+ years of relevant experience
  • Must be DoD 8570 IAT Level II certified (i.e. CCNA Security, CySA+, GICSP, GSEC, Security+ CE, CND, SSCP)
  • “Hands-on” experience and competency in Omnissa Horizon View, VMware ThinApp, MS Windows 11 integration, PowerShell, or related scripting
  • Experience addressing vulnerabilities and working with security tools such as Nessus Tenable and ACAS
  • Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
  • Knowledge of cloud, networking, and enterprise architectures
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in DoD Navy networks preferred
  • Ability to communicate within a structured, delivery-centric professional services team clearly and effectively
  • Experience building and maintaining VDI environments as such as Azure Virtual Desktop, VMware Horizon, Amazon Workspace, Citrix or other platforms
  • Understanding of Cisco UCS platforms
  • Working knowledge of switches, firewalls and proxy servers a plus
  • Related VMware certifications such as VCA, VCP, VCAP, or VCDX
  • Windows OS, Linux OS experience
  • Windows Active Directory, ACAS, DNS, and STIG remediation experience
  • Basic understanding of hybrid cloud architectures and data integration needs
  • A degree in a technical discipline is preferred
