Lakshman will work on building an experimental platform based on ytterbium atoms trapped in optical tweezer arrays that combines continuous reloading of optical tweezers with strong coupling to an optical cavity to demonstrate high-rate, high-fidelity quantum communication with a similar system located at University of Chicago. The first year will focus on building and demonstrating the laser cooling and trapping systems needed to generate continuous loading of ultracold atoms into an optical tweezer array and development of the optical cavity.
